I know people have asked about texturing the gaming boards in the past, and that the problem would be that the texture would rub off against each other when being placed or removed from storage each week getting sand on the floor.
But surely there must be some means of texturing them without that happening?
I thought of a few ideas: we could repaint them mixing sand in with the paint or give them a spray of GW roughcoat (or something similar/cheaper).
Another idea would be to cover the tables with a large sheet of sandpaper, adding a border of ducktape will stop it coming off and they'll be little or no sand rubbing off plus it will be very easy to drybrush?
Your thoughts on the matter?
Also I'm not a big fan of gaming mats but look at these: http://www.zuzzy.com/rl-tf-001_terra_fl ... g_mat.html

Sand paper? I don't think that'll get past health and safety somehow.
Though the concept of texturing the tables is an interesting one and would make the battle scenes look more picturesque, I don't really see the need for it. I can't see that it adds anything to t6he gaming experience beyond making the tables look a little 'prettier'.

I'm yet to be convinced of the cost vrs reward, the storage issues, and the comfort of carrying the boards.
In fact when playing at Warhammer World, the prettier the board, the less comfortable it is to play.
Nice terrain pieces rather than textured boards would be my preference. Speaking of which we do intend to get some of the new terrain when the Planet Strike stuff comes out.

Texturing adds weight to the boards, will flake off leaving them looking scabby and doesn't materially add anything to the game.
Just my 10c.

I think a re-paint would be in order.
And maybe a different green to the current ones, maybe a few grey boards...

Since the club is still against texturing them for several good reasons I'd like to suggest a 2nd option:
Repaint most of the boards using an easy technique called sponge painting it's a great way to achieve a nice looking earthy texture.
For example think of this texture on one of our desert boards?: http://www.marbellapainting.com/Sponge%20Painting.jpg
I believe it's a much better option as it would add some depth to the boards without causing any of the problems that would come with using sand.

That sounds more reasonable.
How much paint will we need to do 20 boards?
Is anyone willing to volunteer to do it?
Add to the cost £66 for renting the hall to actually do it.
Then we can put it to a member's vote.

thats if you do it all at one time! why not do a couple of boards to see how it looks? would be eaiser for members to make a decision when they have something to look at! could try one sandy one and a greeny one? personally i dont think to use justifys the expense

It maybe best to try it out on a thursday night with one of the desert boards, since sponging shouldn't take long to dr.,
If the club can provide the materials I'd be more than happy to do it, but I would like some help with it from 2 other members?

The issue would be how long would it take to dry?
We only have four hours.

I was going to try out the sponge painting effect tonight on one of our gaming boards but I've decided to hold it off because I've found a more interesting painting technique called 'colour wash' which presents a more earthy texture than the sponge technique.
Here's a small tutorial vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODilsfwgVo8
What do you think? Clearly cause of the possible drying time I'd most likely need to do it during the fantasy doubles event in an small area of the hall, if theres space.

I know i might be a little late with this, but,
Maybe try using textured wallaper? just tape of the edges and just paint away?
Well my late 10 cents

There are to problems ith textured paper.
1) Will the models stand up, or will they keep falling over?
2) Is it hardy enough for being shoved in a cupboard, is it going to rip?

What colour paints does the club have available? I'm looking at creating a couple of Grey/Dark brown ones for my up-coming underdark WFB campaign.

We have several shades of green and brown and yellow. But it will depend on if the club still has them. Since no one seems fussed on texturing the tables.
Although we do need to get 3 boards painted up grey for urban games considering all the building the club has now, maybe even paint roads onto 1 or 2 of them?
