Idea for a new WFB campaign
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With the new High Elf book coming out and a few players talking of starting a new High Elf army; I thought it might be fun to base a new campaign around Ulthuan.

My basic idea is that a force from Naggaroth has attacked Ulthuan and they have sent for aid. Some of those messages have been intercepted and less scruplous armies have decided now might be a good time to plunder Vaul's treasury and make off with some magic items.

The High Elves, Wood Elves (rustic cousins coming to aid) and Empire (owing favours via the colleges of magic) are defending Ulthuan.

From Naggaroth the Dark Elves, Chaos mortals and demons, Orcs (from around Wyvern Lake) and Tomb Kings (from Iron sand desert) are attacking.

From the Old World the Dwarves, Bretonians are arriving, yet undecided of their true motives. The Lizardmen of Lustria also join this group (if there are any)

Also from the Old World, Chaos Beasts, Vampire Counts and Skaven come to pillage.

This campaign would combine elements of map and narrative. Using tree campaigns to resolve invasions. The narrative would produce the initial trees, then results would feed into the narrative for the next round.

Would anyone be interested in taking part in such a campaign. I promise that the games will start off small giving all you budding high elf generals time to paint their armies.

Cheers,

Pete

Sounds good. Do you think it would be possible to limit the attackers to two or 3 races? I know that High Elves vs everyone else allows any one to join, but surely if we are careful we could still limit the number of races involved without causing anybody to be excluded? I just think this would prehaps give the campaign more continuinty and allows you to develop two (maybe 3) opposing teams of players (as we did in the Orc/Empire campaign) which I think makes the whole thing even more enjoyable.
But then thats just what I think..

What I have tried to do is limit the campaign to a few factions.

Hopefully that will have a similar effect to limiting the races. Factions can then have a bit of internal disruption to make life interesting.

To be honest, I can't see why Beastmen would be there. You don't find them in Ulthuan, and they don't just board ships to go and fight.

I would be quite happy to play with Empire if you wanted to go this way (but that doesn't mean I don't want to play with my Beasts)

i'm sure there are herds in Narragoth! and the high elf stories tell of mystical beast coming from the mountains on Ulthuan! it's not all peaches and cream there!

Probably after Christmas, although could get going with a few skirmishes to determine faction leaders etc. before then if needed.

The beauty of the faction idea is that players can come and go, as long as someone in the faction plays each time.

Plenty of room.

As the games start off small it is also an ideal way to put together an army as you go.

As a taster the first round games are as follows.

Game 1: There can be only one.
Each member of the faction enters a single named character (which may or may not be the general but must be used in some campaign games) to 'duke it out' to see who leads the faction.
It will not be a turn at a time. All models complete moving, then all casting, then all shooting, then all close combat. Casters may use dice as normal, but must use all their personal dice before moving onto the pool. Models that generate dispel dice may use their dispel dice, but no one else can. For example. A lvl 2 mage uses their own 2 dice and 1 pool dice to cast a spell. The lvl 4 mage uses their own 2 dispel dice plus the remaining pool dice to dispel it. Now there are no pool dice left, so heaven help whoever the level 4 casts at with their own dice!
Last man (or woman, or thing) standing is the winner and leads the faction.

Game 2.
Sound the advance/alarm. A Warhammer Skirmish game.

Each faction has 150 points of core troops. No models may have better than a 5+ save. Models with scout or skirmish special rules cost 1 point less as all models now have skirmish. The faction may (and indeed should) mix and match models from each of the member factions.

Unit upgrades can be bought if you want to (e.g. champions)
Chaos count as having a mortal or beast general, so demons are not allowed as they are not core. Ambush rules are not used.

The winner is the faction who gets a musician to the top of the central tower to sound the alarm/advance for their fellows. This will allow that faction to have the best landing site, or deny this to the invaders if the high elf faction wins.

Sounds like fun eh? Not too many models either. Both games should be played in a single night.

Regular use of the forum will make this campaign successful. Non-users are strongly advised to sign up for an account, or at least pop round to a friend's house occasionally to check the latest news.

The first round will take place just after Christmas.

Players getting involved in a positive way with the background to the campaign will be rewarded. Players just in it to win games at all costs and find loopholes in my rules will be ... 'educated'.

Round 2 games will then be border patrols seeking out a decent staging area. The more games a faction wins, the larger their staging area.

Cheers,

Pete

An interesting idea Pete, telling non forum members to sign up, and telling them this on the forum..!

Unfortunately, Kak'ah'jak has been waylaid in his quest, so the hordes of Chaos will be commandeered by a different General.

Could it be that I intend to copy and paste this information for the notice board?

Only time will tell.

If you have a character, could you send me the details. If you keep the same magic items throughout the campaign, it would be in keeping with a narrative and suitable fluffy rewards given.

The children of chaos are led by Darkblood the terrible, mighty Doombull of Chaos. The only magic item he carries is the mighty Runesword of Chaos.

Jah'kash, however, is still the true power behind the army. It is he who tempers the Doombull's thirst and organises the ambushes that sustains the army while they march on Ulthuan.

Re: let the night reveal its darkest terrors.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was an ancient name…..a name that still struck pure terror into the hearts of men. His true master first heard it whispered in the ancient legends. And armed with this name, the Master set out on a quest to find him. It was a quest he knew would be long and arduous, but to have such a being at his command, he would have paid any price….gladly.

For years he traveled, stealing into the damp, musty libraries of the Empire in the dead of night, researching his fabled quarry, learning of the foul deeds committed by his prey, his respect growing daily for the man whose very name meant death to his enemies. His quest was compounded at every turn, it was as if the very gods opposed him in his thirst for his aspiration…. until he read of an all but forgotten encounter in the Grey mountains.

It was but a name, Frugelhofen. His road was coming to an end. For many months he journeyed into the Grey mountains, and their in the shadow of Frugelhorn mountain, he pursued his goal. Riding into Frugelhofen valley by the light of Morrslieb he felt the power all around him, the winds of Shyish howled about him, he could taste the power in the air. Hexensnacht, the night of witches, when the gibbous moons glower in the night sky, and the corrupting winds of Chaos blow hot and strong in the close summer nights. He knew the dire signs are a summons to the fell creatures of the world, calling them forth! after years of searching, the gods surely where rewarding him. He approached what he thought was a small hamlet in the base of Frugelhofen valley, as he drew closer the moonlight revealed nothing but burnt out shells, and a scene of battle from years past.

He passed a sign, broken in twain, he read it, Frugelhofen. He began to chant, a low murmur at first. He was a master of the winds of Shyish, and he bent them to his indominatable will. They began to glow, lighting his way, a dim glimmer at first, and as he began to close on his prey, the winds grew brighter. The trail led him into the centre of the village, what would have been the main square, and there shining like a beacon, invisible except to those with the gift was where his quest ended.

The two moons where at their zenith, an ideal time to begin the preparations for the summoning. He began by bending the dark winds to his own fell will, letting them slowly empower him with their necromantic force….” Rise fell king…..Rise captain of Krell….Rise Ranlac the Black …champion of the dark powers “, at first he felt nothing, he began to feel as if his long quest had been in vain. Again he began the ritual, calling more power from the shadows, he would not be denied.

The earth stirred, a gentle movement at first. Then the head of a scythe broke the earth, followed by the mighty warrior that welded it. He looked on in awe at the figure, tasting the foul rot in the air that pervaded its very appearance, it stood immobile, then suddenly two red eyes sparked into unlife. “Ranlac” he whispered so low, only the winds heard it, yet the Wight stared at its new master, and he could feel its hatred burning within his new champion.

"A heretic may see the truth and seek redemption. He may be forgiven his past and will be absolved in death.A Traitor can never be forgiven.A Traitor will never find peace in this world or the next. There is nothing as wretched or as hated in all the worlds as a Traitor."

I was seriously considering starting my High Elf army early for this campaign but I dont want to play unpainted minatures if I can help it. I know this will happen once army sizes star growing. So I have decided it's time for the return of Pha. No longer a mere underling, but now promoted to Wizard Lord of the Light Order and commander of the Imperial relief force.

Ghiselle had wandered further than she'd meant to, the mushrooms had not grown well close to the hamlet of La Rochelle.
She'd just decided to retrace her steps, when an unearthly green light attracted her attention.
Was it a rare Lummiere mushroom? If so, it'd make a small fortune for her widdowed mother and put good food onto her and her brothers' plates for the coming winter.
She wound her way through the thickening trees, then came upon a small mere, it's waters were as clear as crystal.
The green light came from an island in its middle. Luckily, a small coracle was drawn up upon the bank, she pushed it onto the water, she was only borrowing it briefly, so no one would mind, and rowed out towards the island.
She stepped out of the coracle, her paddled through the chill waters, holding the hem of her dress up to stop it getting soaked.
She looked up and infront of her was a vision of beauty, a richly dressed lady, glowing green.
She was rooted to the spot, surely this was The Lady of the Lake, a vision granted only to those who were to or had held The Grail!
"Ghiselle, I appear to you to give you this message. You are chosen to lead an army, this army is to undertake a quest, the object of this quest will become apparent. Take up this suit of armour, the shield and sword you see before you, done them and return to your village. Raise the flag of the lilly and call all to your side, when the snows of winter begin to melt, then you will set out."
With these words, the vision dimmed, leaving only a tiny green glimmer on the ground, there, next to a bright suit of armour, the shield and banner, both bearing a lilly motif, grew a Lummiere!

he liked guns! big guns, small guns anything that went bang really excited Skesk, all his short life he had play with warpstone to make as many bangs as he could, which in turn resulted in him obliterating his entire litter. in fact because of the nature of skaven culture no one really noticed Skesk or his experiments, no one ever survived long enough. so in his deep dark warren he played with warpstone to make the biggest bangs he could, he had been long forgotten about and he was miles from any skaven litters or tribes, none of the rats could ever remember Skesk and his laboratory and so he was left in complete silence to play with warpstone and powder.

his location was such that warpstone showers often hit the surface above his warren and he had a plentiful supply in his vault. and in time as he matured his strength grew he developed his work shop and experimented until finally day it was not enough for him he needed more destruction. his eyes now bright green and twisted his mind filled with lust for killing for the sheer pleasure of watching the body die. he started at first attacking passing skaven burning them to a crisp until he had a messenger arrive at his door.

Clan Skyre had heard of his collected wealth and his many experiments, as they had been monitoring the levels of explosions that they could not account for themselves in recent times and their spies had discovered him.
the messenger of course had seen the warpstone vault and gone mad with greed Skesk enjoyed watching him melt.

Skesk arrived in front of the council paraded by Skyre, and all was astonished to see the mark of the horned rat upon him, many feared him as he walked through the hoard of rats that had come to see the myth of the Green eyed rat. Skesk was oblivious to what was going on, he had never really taken part in skaven culture.

the council however mainly feared and despised this young rat, he had grown in power at such a young age and they feared for his ambition, so they had decided that this Skesk should be tested to prove that he was not an impostor and would be sent to prove himself, they had heard of movements in the great sea on the land of the elfy things, and much great weapons to be discovered. Skesk agreed to this as he had nothing else to do, and he had some new toys to play with, he had never seen much of the world and was very naive but the things he would see and learn would soon harden him as he tapped into the inner insanity for murder and explosions his legend starts here...

(mean while Clan Skrye slaves emptied his warren of all his possessions and experiments but what they found would change their decision that this rat should be terminated, for the moment.)

Lord Varek, born to be King, the quest continues.

pete,

Just seen you are starting another thread in the campaigns thread, good idea by the way !, er just 2 things, the name of my wight is RanLac, not raniac although that name is growing on me !!!

secondly i have worked out stats and magic items for my wight character, do i e-mail you or post them on the forum ? its just your not too clear about it in an earlier post ?

oh yeah, does everything have to be wisiwsig as well ?, i have got some new miniatures, (non workshop) and was hoping to get these painted up for it, but for instance my wight has no lance or shield, just a big scythe, can i still use it, or would i need to convert it ?!?

cheers

Pete, I like all of my armies, so I don't really mind. I can be any of the following, Beasts of Chaos, Clan Eshin, Dogs of War, Hordes of Chaos, Chaos Dwarves, Orcs and Goblins, Lizardmen, Vampire Counts - which ever you think is best for the campaign.
If it really makes no difference to you, then I would choose Vampire Counts.

If I have missed anyone out then let me know. There is still plenty of time and I plan to put things up on the notice board this Thursday.

Si,

After some thought I think I'd like a hard copy of any named characters' details. That way you can include sketches and background info etc. I'll collect it all and make a little campaign book out of it. (Something I often do with kid's work and it looks good)

Don't feel obliged to post up any army list details in a public forum, although it is not prohibited. Ditto for character details.

Mr Fibrulay is at last ready to assume command of the Defenders. Resplendant atop his loyal dragon, Tsunami, he is confidant of proving himself worthy of the position. Besides he has deep dislike of his woodland cousins after the experience of his last encounter with them.
Whilst campaigning with his human friend Weasley Wizard they happened to stumble into the boarders of Athel Loren. It was then a madness came upon them and they were viciously attacked by woodelves, without provocation, and barely escaping with their lives. Something that cannot be sais for most of their army!
Should Indy, the tree-hugging eco-warrior with a penchant for tights as opposed the more traditional skirts, get the blessing of the council Mr Fibrulay will be most upset and will very likley stomp his feet and flounce off in a marked manner, such is the rage of an angry High Elf
And woe betide Ulthuan if the incompitant buffoon Prince Sixex should be appointed commander in chief.
Only one elf can save Ulthuan and repel all invaders and that elf is Fibrulay, Vice Admiral of the sun fleet, wielder of the seafarer bow, Rider of Star dgragon Tsunami, Orc-slayer, Vampire-Slayer, Skaven-slayer and even Slayer-slayer

With reguards to the skirmish game

How wil psycology work, im thinkin particularly of panic. Will there be rout tests at 25%, 50% casualties?

Will shooting suffer the -1 penalty to hit for shooting at single models? The Warhammer skirmish booklet recommends not.

No panic for casualties caused.

No -1 to hit.

It'll be good to see you Tim, just bring your character, with equipment that he'd have in a normal game, and some core troops with a 5+ or worse save. (So swordsmen, halberdiers, crossbows, handgunners etc.) Make sure you have a musician model.

The exact turnout will depend on the rest of your faction, and can be sorted on the day.

If you want to e-mail me, I can send you a copy of the campaign booklet with all the details in it.

Cheers,

Pete

I think that this may have been answered before, but just to clarify. Am I correct in thinking that the equpiment that we give to our characters in the opening game must then remain unchanged for the rest of the campaign?

Also just to cause futher confusion, how will undead crumbleyness be handled in the skirmish game. Say my zombie is in combat with two skaven and no-one causes any wounds. Will my zombie die because it is outnumbered?

Thanks.

Yes, the zombie will crumble.

But look on the bright side, if two zombies are in combat with a high elf, and no one does a wound. The High Elf needs insane courage to pass his break test!

Nominate a model to the general, so your undead can march move.

Pete

This idiotic rant from Mr Fibrulay, is just another example of why, the defence of Ulthuan can no longer be led by the incompetent fops, from the court of the Phoenix king. As a result the might Indy, blessed of the everqueen, has emerged from the forests of Avelorn, in order to lead the elves in this time of great need.

We shall now see if there is indeed an Elven hero, worthy of leading Indy and his warhost, but that is very doubtful.

Hah! Rather than have a pretty hero with flowing golden locks, a dazziling white freshly laundered skirt (cut to this years fasionable length) sat proudly on his ancient beast of war you lot would rather be led by a tree! And you call yourselves elves!

PS It's good to know the defenders are starting the campaign in a position of unity and solidarity IaC lives

Whilst Mr Fibrulay and Indy were wrestling each other, pulling hair and slapping across the cheek in a very manly manner the war council of the defenders, in there wisdom, appointed 'Ntur T'Dragon as overall commander

Meanwhile in a tower on the coast of Ulthuan, a heated debate was going on as to which key the warning alarm should be sounded in. Before agreement could be reached the watchers were swamped by invaders from all over the world and had to hitch up their skirts and scarper pronto. Oh the smae of it

Still the battle plan has been forged. We plan to lose all the small games where the very expensive Elves are at a big disavantage and then make a dramatic fight beck once the games start getting over 2000 points

Orders from the Lord Bittersteel:

Any survivors from the failed lookout tower raid are to be publicly maimed, and then turned over to the Temple of Khaine for sacrifice. I will not tolerate failure.

Any lizardmen or Old World humans seen by our troops are to be treated with caution - they are given to false aliences and treachery.

My role as commander of the the Invaders is still disputed by that upstart corpse. Although he has not been able to find the courage to face me in combat yet (maybe it's in one of his jars...), you can rely on this - he will be brought to ground, and he will be destroyed.

Updated campaign booklet should be flying its way across t'internet in a couple of minutes.

I'll print one for the booklet in my bag, and one for the notice board so all you who I have not been able to get in touch electronically can still see it.

Re: Border Patrols
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The screams of the sacrificed still hung in the air, like delicate lacework of pain. Lord Bittersteel smiled at the sounds. The captured human peasants were a pleasing perk of this war; half went to the slave pens, to be put to work and then sold on their return to Naggeroth. The other half were given to the Temple, and made to scream before being sacrificed. With luck, and the blessings of Khaine, there would be many more such ‘perks’ before this war was over.

Reports from the landing zones were good. The beastmen had been crushed, as had the humans with their knights. The high elves had been fought to a standstill, for very few loses’ to the Druchii. So far, after three small engagements, Bittersteel had lost eight Druchii and four horses. And a number of goblins, but that was what they were there for. The goblins had been disappointing when allowed to go off by themselves, though Bittersteel. They seemed only to try their hardest when lead by Druchii officers. Maybe the threat of public vivisection spurred them on somewhat.

The noble who had been leading the patrols, a minor lordling whose name Bittersteel had already forgotten, had survived his wounds long enough to be executed for his failures against the high elves.

Though the failure did have a positive side; one high elf had been captured. For the past several hours, it had been questioned by the Temple, adding its screams to the lacework which still filled the air, growing in complexity as the witch elves brought more of their varied methods to bear. Several minutes ago, the screams of the elf had faded, leaving the deeper cries of the humans without a proper counterpoint. That could mean only one thing – the elf had given up all it knew of the defences of its stolen homeland; the idea that it could have died before the witch elves wanted it too was ludicrous. The Brides of Khaine were experts in the field of pain and blood, their craft honed to an art through decades of torture.

Sure enough, the massive doors of the Black Arcs throne room opened, dragged by witch elves. A dozen of the Brides entered, what was left of the captive carried between them. It seemed to be missing several fingers, both ears, an eye... not as bad as Bittersteel had been expecting, considering the pathetic cries for mercy he had been hearing from the elf. There was blood, and burns, and minor missing pieces, but nothing a Druchii warrior couldn’t have endured. A sickening sight, this excuse for an elf. The high elves had fallen so far from their strong heritage.

But what a different sight greeted his eyes as he looked upon the witch elves. Their bodies were held ever young by the blessings of the Cauldron of Blood. Lithe, and slender, their muscles taught and toned by years of training and battle. Their smooth, white skin was pleasingly speckled by bright drops of fresh blood; their lips, crimson from drinking from their victims. The scanty clothing, traditional for the Brides of Khaine, revealed enough to entice, but not all. The cruel, jagged blades they carried lent an air of savagery to these warrior-maidens.

The limp form of the high elf was dropped to the floor on the cold stone in front of Bittersteels throne. It curled into a foetal position, huddling around its pain and maiming. “My Lord,” said the witch elf hag, “It held nothing back. We know all that we need to from this wretch.”

“Good. Your sisters and you enjoyed yourselves, I trust?” replied Bittersteel. This hag was particularly enticing – large, dark eyes, creamy skin, strength and grace evident from the way she moved, her form held in a state of perpetual youth by the Lord of Murder. A deadly killer, with the beauty of an dark angel.

“Yes, my lord. We were hoping to give this wretch to Khaine. If, of course, you are done with it?” The fire in the eyes of the witch elf flared at the thought of sacrificing the high elf. It was a great honour to send one of the fallen kin to the Lord of Murder.

Bittersteel considered for a moment. Could the high elf be of any more use? A glance at the huddled form on the floor was all he needed. What possible use could this scum be? “You may sacrifice it now. Khaine must be given his due, in blood. All glory to Khaine and the Witch King!”

The witch elves scooped up the high elf, and with a cry of, “To the alter!”, the Brides turned to the door. The high elf moaned at the thought of what was to come.

“Stop!”, spoke Bittersteel, his strong voice cutting across the witch elves cries. “Do it here.” He caught the eye of the hag, and smiled cruelly. “Do it slowly...”

With a sly smile, the witch elf drew blade. “Yes, my lord.”

After a few discussions the third round scenario is beginning to take place.

The results so far have been interesting.

Perhaps we should arrange a second border patrol date as the one we had last week seemed successful.

I'm thinking beginning of March?

Pete

Hi All,

I have simply pasted and copied all the old posts to the new forum, i think that a record of the character development should be on the new site.

I hope that participants in the campaign will pick up where they left off, and continue to use this thread for Pete's WFB Campaign.

cheers
