Yeah the Demon List I played in the final game was filthy. He had brought a really hard tournement list whereas mine although competitive was not on the scale of that. Also bearing in mind that I had only played one game vs. demons prior to this and have never read the book so he had a distinct advantage there also.
My worst performer of the comp was the steam tank by far. It ony killed 8 dryads and 1 1/2 felsh hounds over three games, whereas my performers were my Swordsmen and detachment which between them probably got 900 vps over the three games - not dad for a 200pt unit.
I am not complaining about the third game (although he was an obvious tournament player - which I am not), I am just a little dissappointed to come away from it with nothing have won both of my previous 2 so convincingly
Anyway
There ya go

There ya go If you came away having had an enjoyable day then I would say you did not come away from it with nothing. As a club we are not ever going to win competative events unless we are prepared to put the effort in and work at it. But that is not what we do. We are a hobby club, in it because we enjoy it as a hobby and not just for the competition. I know when I go to events I don't go to win, I go for the social side. I've just come back from the Mansfield Maul, one of the best events for a long time, on a par with the Fantasy doubles I would say. Friday night; meet up with some old aquaintances (after going to these tournaments for a few years you do get to know one another) Went out for a curry, drank too much (for me that's more than 2 pints ). Saturday played 3 great games of Warhammer finishing with a 5998 point doubles match (helped along with cheese and wine brought along by my doubles partner). Finish at about midnight, back to the hotel, then up again Sunday for another 2 good fun games. Total cost for the weekend including petrol, food, hotel, and ticket entry was around £200. That is the sort of dedication several players are going to have to put in if you seriously intend to compete as a club. I'm not suggesting it needs to cost that much, but you are going to have to travel further and stay longer than most seem prepared to at the moment. With family comitments and tight budgets how many do you think we can get as a club to go to these events? Just playing one dayers once or twice a year at Lenton is never going to give Gobstyks a event winning team. You need the experience of playing competatively week in, week out for that. I can't see that happening, it's not our style. Gareth

You get me wrong Gareth.
I go to many a roleply convention for 4 or 5 day periods and am well aware of the social aspect of gaming.
I am however, competitive and wish to bring some points away from every game I play.
IO got approximately 800 vp's from the last game, but this was dwarfed by the 2700 he got. He was the winner of the tournament.
My plus points were being on tabel 3 for my second game and then the top table for the final game
A quick run down of my games
I have
Warrior priest, 2 x lev 2 wizards, 6 x knights, 7 x knights, 2 x unit of 10 Handgunners, 10 huntsman, 22 swordsman (det of 11 halberds), 5 x Pistoliers, 2 x Cannon, Stank.
Game 1
He had Wood Elves
This included 4 units of Wardancers, 6 units of Dryads, a Treeman, 3 units of Archers, A character with the HoD, level 2 wizaerd and Dryad Character.
Turn 1 He got 1st turn and advanced towards me with the his entire army, 2 units of dryads, a treeman and 1 unit of wardancers moving up behind some wood towards my cannons, huntsman and 1 of my units of Knights. The other half just came forwards slightly so i couldn't get straight in with 1st turn charges. He killed a few rubbush guys with his archers
I shuffled around a bit failing to do much with my magic (killed 4 archers) or my great cannons (killed a few dryads) and then the Stank shot, taking half the wound off the treeman and kille 4 dryand (good start)
Turn 2 He advanced a bit more and killed of my pistoliers with the Hod arrow (I had moved my wizards out the way) this caused several of my units (half my army) to panic and so it didn't look promising but thankfully in my turn they all rallied (huzzah). Sop I spent some time rallying, doing some magic to little effect and a bit of shuffling, Including moving the steam tank right in his face
Turn 3 He charged the Steam tank in the side with some dryads (I chuckle) and the Swordsmen in the front with some too. Nothing happens to the tank and when it is my turn I kill a couple or 3 and the swordsmen break the Dryads easily, chasing them down and going into the flank of his archers.
My Cannons finish of the treeman and a couple of his dryad friends and some wardancers too (woohoo)
Turn 4 He is in a bit of a pickle, does some manouvering including hiding his wizard, I had killed the noble with a cannon ball earlier (forgot to mention that). The Stank remains locked in combat with soome rubbishy dryads.
He charges my Knights with 9 wardancers and kills 4 (from 7) I in response kill 4 wardancers and win combat by 3 (war banner) he flees and I chase him down
On the other flank I charge some Dryads and easily beat them and run off the board during the chase down bit.
Turn 5
He has little left but keeps going he manages to kill off my canon crew but that is it really. My knights come back on the board to hunt down some of his archers.
My swordsman are charged by yet more foolish dryads and then the run another group off of the board.
I think there was a turn six in there somewhere too but its all a little blurred
Game 2
He has Dark elves
2 x 20 Spearmen, 12ish Black Guard With ASF Banner, War Hydra, 10 x repeater x-bows, 2 x 5 harpies 5 x Cold Ones, 2 x Wizard, ASB on Cold one. 5 x Shades
Turn 1 I get to go 1st, I move a bit, the cannons kill both handlers on the Hydra, but it makes both its regeneration saves. It passes it leadership. I do some innefectual magic and shooting beyond that. He advences and does 2 wounds on the Stank with repeater x-bows (oh the shame).
Turn 2 This is the turn where nothing happens for me pretty much (a cannon blows up). He does more wounds on the Stank with magic and x-bows (I am ashamed). But the cold ones do fail a stupidity test (1st good thing)
Turn 3 I charge the cold ones and win combat but he passes his leadership (not good) He in his turn kills approx 3 knights (Thankfully we draw) - but it wouls seem that i can make 4+ but not 1+ saves). He also kills 2 knight on my other unit with shooting from the shade (more 1+ saves failed) but they hold.
Turn 4 I do 3 wounds on the hydra with magic, kill some shades with magic and shooting. The Stank misfires and I take it down to 4 wounds. Its not looking too good - he has definitely killed more on VP's. He manages to do another wound on the Stank with X=Bows and then makes a tactical error.
Turn 5 I charge one unit of spears with my swordsman and their detachment and the other unit in the front with my Knights. I do the combat with the Swordsman 1st and leave him needing a Double 1 to stay in combat. we chase him down and go into the flank of his other spears woth my detachment. The immediately break hte unit in conjunction with the Knights and then they go into the flank of the Black guard who hold (cos they is stubborn). But I got form haveing only a few VP's to loads in one turn - woohoo. My Pistoliers take a wound off the Hydra, leaving it on one.
Turn 6 Not much happens, I do some manouvering, he tries to finish off a wizard with his Strength 1 breath weapon (fail)
It is victory to me - woohoo.
these were both great games which hung in the balance at a few points.
Game three Turns 1-6 I get my butt kicked
This was not so enjoyable

Other than the first sentence my reply was not directed specificaly at you Tim. It seems your gripe is with the scoring system then. Was it 0-20 system with a massacre scoring 20, solid 17, minor 13 and Draw 10? Gareth

No it was a 0-25 rating
25 - 0 22 - 3 19 - 6 Some others
Don't know after that. I got all three of those. Two in my favour, one against.
Maybe a 16 -11 and 13-12 for a draw with VP's deciding who got 13. But I didn't take too much notice of how it worked TBH.
I did expect to do much worse than I did and would have been happy with win/lose/draw in any order. Just didn't like the whitewash.
I just reread my previous post - boy it could do with some spellchecking - I guess thats what you get for typeing in a rush at work.
I agree to get competitive as a club we need more people to play at a higher standard, and that means going to more comps, but you are right we are more of a hobbyist club and that is fine - I wouldn't want it to be ultra competitive every time i managed to put in an appearance.
I always go to win by the way, not necessarily the comp as a whole but each and every game I play, and if I lose I hope I learn something. I learnt little from the last game TBH - massacres never teach you much if anything (not to play v demons).
No gripe with the scoring system, just with the final performance. Could have done with some practice games versus demons TBH but as already stated i haven't played in 6 months or more so i should really be happy with where I came (but unfortunately I am not).

Thanks for the report Tim, I particularly enjoyed the Dark Elf slaughtering one, for some reason Empire seems to fare quite well against Dark Elf.
Out of curiosity can you remember what was in the Daemon army? I'm just curious to see what the Tourney winning Daemon lists are like.
Thanks,
Lee

2 x 5 harpies

2 x Khorne Heralds (1 a BSB with -2 leadership banner and Strength 7, the other with strenght 6, both on juggernauts or bloodcrushers)
1 x Slaaneshi Herald
Unit of Slaaneshi Fast Cavalry (6 or 7)
Unit of Slaaneshi Cav (special Choice - pretty much ogres with a better charge range) 5 of these I think.

Tim et al, why dont we proxy some "nasty" deamon lists and hone our skills.
I am not going to volunteer to play the deamons, as going from my skills with the "nurgle" 40K list, which shuld kick things real bad, I dont have that killer instinct needed........

Thanks Tim.
I'd be more than happy to play such a list, however I feel I would get whined to the ground quite like Graham does when he fields Daemons so it's somewhat discouraging.
Thanks,
Lee
