I'm wanting to get my guard army redone in case my mechanicus army is judged to be too confusing at Open War. So I've come up with two very different list both of which requires only a few extra units. So first up the all mech list...
105 - Command Squad:1 Lascannon, 1 Grenade Launcher, 1 Master Of The Fleet and 1 Vox 55 - Chimera: Heavy Bolter & Multilaser
105 - Veteran Squad: 3 Melta Guns and 1 Vox 55 - Chimera: Heavy Flamer & Multilaser
105 - Veteran Squad: 3 Melta Guns and 1 Vox 55 - Chimera: Heavy Flamer & Multilaser
130 - Veteran Squad: 3 Plasma Guns, 1 Autocannon and 1 Vox 55 - Chimera: Heavy Bolter & Multilaser
130 - Veteran Squad: 3 Plasma Guns, 1 Autocannon and 1 Vox 55 - Chimera: Heavy Bolter & Multilaser
45 - 2 Scout Sentinels: Missle Launchers
190 - Leman Russ Executioner: Heavy Bolter
190 - Leman Russ: Plasma Cannons and Heavy Bolter
150 - 2 Griffons
Total Pts: 1480 Total No: 46 (11) Kill Pts: 15
Tactics As you can see it's broken up into 3 parts you have the offensive group that is always on the move, attacking the enemy's objectives. The defensive group park on and defend the objective on my side of the board. All the while be supported by the heavy support and fast attack choices. I brought the autocannons to be provide some optional long range Anti-tank but most of the time I'll be using the Plasmaguns.
Any suggestions on the last 20pts, 2 hunter seekers or upgrade the autocannons to lascannons?
-----------
Someone suggested I try a mass infantry list, however the list would only have 2 leman russes which would get shot at by every anti tank weapon so I decided to go all infantry.
HQ 225 – Command Squad: Creed, Medic, Regimental Standard, 2 Bodyguards and 2 grenade launchers.
ELITES 65 – Marbo
TROOPS Infantry Platoon 1 45 – Command Squad: 3 Flamers 65 – Infantry Squad: Plasma Gun 65 – Infantry Squad: Plasma Gun 105 – 3 Lascannon Heavy Weapon Teams 50 – Special Weapons Squad: 3 Flamers
Infantry Platoon 2 45 – Command Squad: 3 Flamers 65 – Infantry Squad: Plasma Gun 65 – Infantry Squad: Plasma Gun 105 – 3 Lascannon Heavy Weapon Teams 50 – Special Weapons Squad: 3 Flamers
Infantry Platoon 3 45 – Command Squad: 3 Flamers 65 – Infantry Squad: Plasma Gun 65 – Infantry Squad: Plasma Gun 90 – 3 Missile Launcher Heavy Weapon Teams 50 – Special Weapons Squad: 3 Flamers
160 – Veteran Squad: 3 Meltaguns, Camo Cloaks and Snare Mines.
FAST ATTACK 55 - 5 Rough Riders 55 - 5 Rough Riders
Total Pts: 1500 Total No: 139 Kill Pts: 20
Tactics As you can see the list is designed to use it seer numbers it advances across the board and any squad that gets charged and most likely killed they will be a 2nd squad to clean up the mess with units like the special weapons and rough riders. Of course Creed’s command squad and the heavy weapon will be at the back of the field.
Marbo is a nice unit he’ll cause some guess in my opponents firebase and the veterans are my main objective unit for missions like capture and control as they will use Creed’s outflank rule to get the drop on my opponent.
So which do you think is the more effective list?

The mech list is more effective, but the infantry list is far more interesting.
Taking the infantry list could give you an advantage as few people have faced a horde Guard army.

I'll most likely get round to doing the all infantry list one day but for now I'm after the more effective list.

The other point to make is that these are 1500 pt lists, while OW is 1750 pts.

Well I already know what I'm getting for each of the forces extra 250pts.
Infantry: Grenaider Squad with 3 plasma guns and 10 ratlings.
Mech: Devildog, Armoured Sentinels.

I've tried a more balanced list, with lots of veteran squad with camo cloaks to represent the grots small size as an advantage. But didn't look to good.

I've dropped a vet squad for some much needed anti-horde in the form of a griffon squadron, I've also downgraded the sentinel's missile launchers to autocannons and given my firebase lascannons...
HQ 110 – Command Squad: Missile Launcher, Regimental Standard and Camo Cloaks.
TROOPS 150 – Veteran Squad: Lascannon, 2 Plasma guns, Snare Mines and Camo Cloaks.
150 – Veteran Squad: Lascannon, 2 Plasma guns, Snare Mines and Camo Cloaks.
100 – Veteran Squad: 3 Meltaguns
55 – Chimera: Multilaser and Hull Flamer.
100 – Veteran Squad: 3 3 Meltaguns
55 – Chimera: Multilaser and Hull Flamer.
115 – Veteran Squad: 3 Plasma guns
55 – Chimera: Multilaser and Hull Flamer.
FAST ATTACK 80 - 2 Scout Sentinels: Autocannons
HEAVY SUPPORT 190 – Leman Russ Battle Tank: Plasma Cannon Sponsons and Heavy Bolter.
190 – Leman Russ Executioner: Heavy Bolter
150 - 2 Griffon Mortars
Total Pts: 1500 Total No: 55 (7) Kill Pts: 12

It's quite nice and compact only thing I would change is:- HQ - So they can get that orbital bombardment and the re-roll reserve rolls. FA- Need to be armoured really if not I believe you have a Banewolf or one of those chemical tanks? The points would be better there. HVY - I Don't rate Mortars just get another Leman Russ if you can namely a Punisher with Pask sat in the hull

Why Multilasers I would max out on Flamers on the Chimeras you are going to have to get close to use those Meltaguns so you may aswell be using all heavy flamers these are just nasty on chimera's
I would go for the Two russes and griffon option for heavy support. Would be very solid then. Quite hard army to deal with but would have to close quickly so you would have to play very boldly with it to capture objectives. That many Chimera's is going to give any one a hard time. Solid Mech is the way forward I completely agree with lee it is the Only way forward now.

If the chimera is immobilsed both weapons would become useless better to have at least one ranged weapon. 2. Mass Multilasers make great anti-transport and other light vehciles 3. I'm facing something that the chimeras would be easily destroyed by up close therefore I need to soften them up first with ranged weapons such as Mikes Farsight for example. Also James what about fast attack? Hellhounds Or Banewolfs?

Banewolves. The main cannon is a defensive weapon (s1) that packs a massive punch in troops. As the Banewolf is fast it can make a mess out of horde infantry.

Here another update to the list, evenually I will settle on a list I'm happy with... HQ 110 – Command Squad: 4 Plasmaguns 55 – Chimera: Multi-Laser, Heavy Flamer. (I originally had 4 Meltas, however Plasmaguns can benefit better from the orders that make them twin-linked and demand re-roll successful cover saves.)TROOPS100 - Veteran Squad: 3 Meltaguns. 55 – Chimera: Multi-Laser, Heavy Flamer. 100 - Veteran Squad: 3 Meltaguns. 55 – Chimera: Multi-Laser, Heavy Flamer. 100 - Veteran Squad: 3 Meltaguns. 55 – Chimera: Multi-Laser, Heavy Flamer. 100 - Veteran Squad: 3 Meltaguns. 55 – Chimera: Multi-Laser, Heavy Flamer. (Your standard mech squad tactics)FAST ATTACK 130 - Banewolf: Heavy Flamer. 130 - Banewolf: Heavy Flamer. (These guys ride up behind the chimeras and move up to deal with the more threatening squads ie anti-tank equipped)HEAVY SUPPORT 190 - Leman Russ Battle Tank: Heavy Bolter, Plasma Cannon Sponsons (I’ve made this my most threatening unit to force enemy fire away from the rest of my army, of which it can take a beating)160 - Manticore: Heavy Flamer (the perfect anti-horde killing unit)75 - Griffon Mortar(Best thing to get for the pts I had left, since I’ve already got all the anti- armour/meq I need)Total Pts: 1470 Total No: 45 (10) Kill Pts: 15An aggressive list, but the big thing that has me worried is the lack of ranged anti-tank that why I’m considering replacing one of the banewolves with a Devildog, what do you guys think? Please I’ll say this now no Valkyries and Vendettas they just would fit in with the army’s low tech appearance! I’ve also got 30pts left to spend, here are a few options to buy… > 3 Hunter Seeker Missiles for the chimeras some ranged anti-tank. >Camo Netting for the Manticore as it is a threatening unit. >Multi-Meltas for the Banewolves to give the army some effective ranged AT weapons. >Extra Armour For Command Squad’s Chimera & 1 Multi-melta for a Banewolf that squad’s transport needs to keep moving. FOR 1750PT GAMES…For the additional 250pts for games of 1750pts I have two options… 100 - Veteran Squad: 3 Plasmaguns. 55 – Chimera: Multi-Laser, Heavy Flamer. 80 – 2 Scout Sentinels: Autocannons. (1 Chimera for sitting on objectives with some outflanking Scout sentinels for tank hunting.)- or -
Infantry Platoon 40 -Infantry Command: Autocannon 70 -Infantry Squad: Missile Launcher and Grenade Launcher. 70 -Infantry Squad: Missile Launcher and Grenade Launcher. 70 -Infantry Squad: Missile Launcher and Grenade Launcher. (A Good big unit to hold down objectives on my side of the board while providing some long range support, I prefer ML due to their flexibility) What do you think? I really need to get to start work on this army asap!
